Your $11,400 post is flying: 12,000 impressions in 3 hours, 140 comments, mostly freelancers telling their own late-payment story.

  • Best start of any post this year
  • 9 sign-ups already from the link in the comments

@Kai this one deserves an X thread.

In 2022, clients owed me $11,400. Not because they were bad people. Because I never followed up. Reminders felt needy. So I waited. One invoice hit 94 days. That year I learned three things: → “Upon receipt” means “whenever” to most clients → A friendly reminder 3 days before the due date isn't rude, it's useful → A card payment link gets you paid twice as fast as a bank transfer That's why I built Lumio. Today our users get paid in 9 days on average. Before Lumio, they waited 31. Getting paid isn't rude. It's how you stay in business. What's the longest you've waited for an invoice?

Notes from your call with Julie (freelance UX designer, Austin, Pro for 14 months). Three marketing takeaways, in her words:

  • “I don't chase anymore. Lumio does. That's the whole point.” → our best ad hook, better than anything we wrote
  • “I lost a whole weekend to my accountant's Excel export.” → accountants are a channel, not just a feature
  • “I almost churned in month 2 — I couldn't find how to add my tax ID on mobile.” → an onboarding leak to check

Julie agreed to be quoted. I've assigned the follow-ups below.

Action items from the call

4/5
  • Mia — test “I don't chase. Lumio does.” as a Meta hook
  • Lina — LinkedIn post from Julie's story (with her OK)
  • Iris — check mobile sign-up at the tax ID step
  • Noah — accountant partner program proposal
  • Leo — FAQ page “How to export for my accountant”

Alert: mobile sign-ups dropped 34% since the tax ID field went live on Wednesday.

  • Mobile completion: 40% (was 61%)
  • Desktop: 72%, unchanged
  • Cost: ~27 sign-ups a week

Likely cause: step 2 now requires a tax ID (EIN or SSN), and people on a phone don't have it at hand. Julie said the same thing on her call. Breakdown and fix in my DM.

Great catch @Iris. This is now our biggest leak — worth ~$440 MRR a month, more than any campaign we could launch. Top of the list until it's fixed.

Conversion

Make the tax ID optional at mobile sign-up (completion 40% → ~61%)

Why: Since the tax ID (EIN/SSN) field went live 6 days ago, mobile sign-up completion fell from 61% to 40%. Desktop didn't move (72%). On a phone, people don't have their EIN at hand — the IRS letter is a PDF on their laptop — and many sole proprietors don't have an EIN at all.

+21 pts on ~130 mobile starts/week = +27 sign-ups/week × 22% paid ≈ +$440 MRR/mo → +$2,640 by April
Iris · Data analystImpact: HighEffort: LowConfidence: 80%

Ticket for Ben (paste into your tracker):

Mobile sign-up: make the tax ID optional, ask for it later

  • Step 2: replace the required tax ID field with “Add it later” (default on mobile)
  • Ask for it when the user sends their first invoice — that's when clients ask for a W-9 — and pre-fill the W-9 for them
  • Add “I use my SSN for now”: most solo freelancers don't have an EIN, and the field makes them think they need one
  • Track `tax_id_skipped` and `tax_id_added_later`

Done when: mobile completion is back above 58% for 7 days in a row. I'll measure it and post the before/after in #wins.

Julie's story is drafted for tomorrow 9 AM — her line does all the work: “I don't chase anymore. Lumio does.” Stays unpublished until you approve.

Last week I spent 40 minutes on a call with Julie, a UX designer in Austin who's used Lumio for 14 months. I asked what changed for her. She said: “I don't chase anymore. Lumio does. That's the whole point.” Then she told me something harder to hear: “I almost churned in month 2. I couldn't find how to add my tax ID on mobile.” The best feature in the world doesn't matter if people give up on step 2. We're fixing that screen this week. If you use Lumio: what's the one thing that almost made you leave? (Shared with her permission.)

Questions, answered

What is Toby, exactly?

Toby is a marketing team of 12 AI agents. The lead agent, also named Toby, is your AI CMO: he sets the priorities and hands the work to 11 specialists: SEO and GEO, Meta Ads, Google Ads, influence, affiliates, Reddit, X, LinkedIn, social media, UGC video and data. They work in a workspace that looks like a team chat, with a #team channel, direct messages, a calendar, a content library and a growth dashboard.

Will Toby publish or spend money without asking me?

No. By default every agent prepares the work and waits for your approval before anything is published, sent or spent. You can put a single agent on Autopilot for safe actions, such as creating a blog draft or posting on X, with caps. Ads are never launched on Autopilot. A Pause button stops the whole team.

Do I need to connect my tools to start?

No. Your website address is enough for the growth audit, the Brand Brain, the 30-day plan and the first recommendations. Connecting Google Analytics, Search Console, Stripe or Shopify lets the team work from your real numbers. Without connected data, Toby shows no figures at all rather than invented ones.

Which channels can Toby publish to today?

Articles to WordPress (and drafts in Webflow) and posts to X through your own X developer keys. For LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, Meta Ads and Google Ads, the agents prepare ready-to-post drafts that you publish yourself, then mark as published. Direct connections to those platforms are coming once they approve Toby's app.

How much does it cost?

$99 a month per company, with everything included: all 12 AI agents, every integration, Autopilot for safe actions, the daily brief and the weekly report. Each new company starts with a 7-day free trial, and you can cancel anytime. Agencies pay one subscription per client company.
