Toby vs ChatGPT for marketing

ChatGPT is one of the best general assistants available, and plenty of founders already use it to write posts and brainstorm campaigns. Toby is narrower on purpose: a team of 12 marketing agents that starts by reading your website, works from a shared Brand Brain, watches your data and sends recommendations with the deliverable already prepared. Toby runs on Anthropic’s Claude models. Here is an honest look at when each one fits.

Choose Toby if…

  • You want marketing to move without writing the prompt yourself each time: the team proposes, you approve.

  • You want every piece to start from the same context: your product, ideal customer, competitors and brand voice.

  • You want recommendations tied to your own Search Console, Analytics, Stripe or Shopify numbers, with the evidence shown.

  • You want a workflow around the work: approval cards, a content calendar, publishing to WordPress and X, results checked after 7 days.

Choose ChatGPT if…

  • You need an assistant for everything, not only marketing: emails, code, research, spreadsheets.

  • You want the lowest possible cost: ChatGPT has a free plan.

  • You enjoy writing prompts and building your own workflows, and prefer full flexibility over a structured process.

  • Your marketing needs are occasional (a post here, an email there) rather than a weekly rhythm across several channels.

  • Your company already runs on ChatGPT with your tools connected, and the team knows it well.

ChatGPT is a great assistant. That’s not the question.

If you ask ChatGPT for ten LinkedIn hooks or a landing page outline, you will get good material in seconds. As of November 2026, it also remembers things across conversations, connects to apps you use, runs scheduled tasks, and offers ChatGPT Work for longer, multi-step tasks on paid plans. For general work, it is hard to beat.

The question is different: who decides what marketing work should happen this week, from which data, and who makes sure it ships? With a general assistant, that is still you. Toby is built to take that part on.

The difference starts before the first prompt

When you sign up, Toby reads your website (pages and sitemap) and runs a growth audit: exact SEO checks on titles, meta descriptions, H1s, alt text, structured data and sitemap; conversion checks on your homepage headline, calls to action, social proof and pricing page; and an AI-visibility test that asks three buyer questions and looks at which brands come up.

Then it writes your Brand Brain: six editable documents on your product, ideal customer, competitors, brand voice, marketing strategy and content strategy. Every agent reads them before answering. A separate document, Toby’s memory, updates itself with your decisions, results, preferences and the reasons you dismissed ideas. You never paste your positioning into a new chat again.

Who starts the conversation

In ChatGPT, you prompt, or you set up a scheduled task with your own instructions. In Toby, the routines are already there: a daily brief from your AI CMO every morning in your time zone, a weekly report every Monday, and recommendations that appear when your data shows something worth acting on. They come from expert rules and a library of about 55 proven plays, then go through a quality check that rewrites or discards generic ideas.

Example, for Lumio, a fictional invoicing app: “Your page about invoice templates gets many impressions in Search Console but few clicks. Here are three new title tags and a meta description built around the query people actually type.” The rewrite is ready to paste.

From an answer to work that ships

A chat answer still has to be copied, formatted, scheduled and tracked. In Toby, each recommendation has Apply, Later and Dismiss buttons. Drafts land in Content and Calendar. Anything that writes to a tool (publishing a WordPress article, posting on X, saving a Gmail draft, inviting an affiliate in Rewardful) becomes a “To approve” card. For channels without a direct connection yet, such as LinkedIn or Instagram, the draft is ready and you click “Mark as published” after posting.

Seven days after you mark a recommendation done, the agent comes back with the measured result when the data is connected. Over time, the team learns what works for you.

A team, not one assistant

Toby has 12 agents, each with its own methods: Leo for SEO and AI search visibility, Mia and Sam for Meta Ads and Google Ads drafts, Ray for Reddit (helpful replies that always disclose the affiliation), Noah for affiliates, Zoe for influencer outreach, Kai, Lina and Jade for X, LinkedIn and social, Nina for UGC video, Iris for data. Toby, the AI CMO, delegates and keeps the plan coherent. You can talk to them in #team, by direct message, or from Slack and Discord.

Each agent has its own autonomy setting, and Autopilot never applies to ads or spending. Many people keep ChatGPT for everything else and use Toby for the marketing rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

Can’t I do the same thing with ChatGPT and good prompts?

You can get very good individual pieces. What takes time is the rest: keeping context up to date, deciding what to do this week from your data, organizing drafts, getting approvals, publishing and checking results. Toby packages that into a team and a workflow. If you prefer building it yourself, ChatGPT is a flexible base.

Doesn’t ChatGPT have memory and connectors too?

Yes. As of November 2026, ChatGPT has memory across chats, apps that connect to your tools, and scheduled tasks. The difference is focus: Toby’s memory and Brand Brain are marketing documents read by every agent, and its connectors feed marketing signals that trigger recommendations without a prompt.

Which AI models does Toby use?

Toby runs on Anthropic’s Claude models: a larger model for Toby, the AI CMO, and for quality checks, and faster models for the specialist agents and small tasks. Agents can also search the web to back their recommendations with real sources.

Is Toby more expensive than ChatGPT?

Yes, for most people. ChatGPT has a free plan, and Toby costs $99 a month per company. You are paying for a structured marketing team: the audit, the Brand Brain, specialist agents, routines, approvals and publishing.

Can I use both?

Of course. Many people keep ChatGPT for general work and use Toby for marketing. Every Toby deliverable is plain text you can copy anywhere.
